I explore optical illusion by distorting geometric patterns through drawing and painting. I have a long-standing obsession with Op Art, and explore my ideas via a cube motif. Each work is constructed through careful planning - drawing out and mapping scaffolding lines around which to distort the pattern; and through spontaneity - learning new geometric rules and changing elements of the formula, such as light and colour. This draws the viewer away from the monotony of the repeating pattern, and deliberately disrupts the harmony of the final composition. The meditative, repetitive motions that come with pattern making immerse me in a flow state during the painting process. I relish in the slowness in the act of painting patterns, allowing my human errors to reflect in the minor intricacies of the work. The final image reflects this to the onlooker, providing them with a viewing experience that encourages them to question and decipher the methodology behind it.
